Non Destructive Testing & Related Services

We offer a wide array of Non Destructive Testing Services for metal structures like Ultrasonic Testing Services, Radiography Testing Services, Magnetic Particle Testing Services, Dye Penetrant Testing Services, Stress Relieving, Leak Testing Services, Vacuum Testing Services, Metallography Services and so on.

Non Destructive Testing (NDT), Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Non
Destructive Inspection (NDI) are the terms used to represent the techniques
that are based on the application of physical principles employed for the
purpose of determining the characteristics of materials or components or
systems and for detecting and assessing the inhomogeneities and harmful
defects without impairing the usefulness of such materials or components of
systems.

NDT plays an important role not only in quality control of the finished product
but also during various stages of manufacturing. NDT is also used for condition
monitoring of various items during operation to predict and access the
remaining life of the component while retaining its structural integrity. NDT
enables optimum utilization of components without sacrificing safety. The use
of microprocessors for data acquisition and processing and automated devices
for reliable testing have vastly improved the condition monitoring on complex
components and plants. The operator dependency for routine inspection is
reduced and thus the person can concentrate more on the technological
aspects. The end result is the saving in time, cost and improvement in precision
and reliability of the results obtained.

NDT methods range from the simple to the intricate. Visual inspection is the
simplest of all. Surface imperfections invisible to the eye may be revealed by
Penetrant and magnetic methods. If serious surface defects are found, there is
often little point in proceeding further to the more complicated examination of
the interior by other methods like ultrasonics or radiography. The principal
NDT methods are Visual or Optical Inspection, Liquid Penetrant Testing,
Magnetic Particle Testing, Radiography Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Eddy
Current Testing, Helium Leak Detection, etc.

Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), also known as Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique used to detect surface-breaking defects or discontinuities in materials such as metals, plastics, and ceramics. DPT is a widely used testing method in industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and construction.

Dye Penetrant Testing involves the application of a liquid penetrant, typically a colored dye, to the surface of the material being tested. The penetrant is then allowed to seep into any cracks or defects in the surface through capillary action. After a suitable dwell time, excess penetrant is removed, and a developer, typically a white powder, is applied to the surface. The developer draws out the penetrant from the defects, creating a visible indication that can be easily detected.

Dye Penetrant Testing can be performed on a variety of surfaces, including rough, smooth, porous, and non-porous surfaces. The testing method can detect defects such as cracks, porosity, laps, seams, and other surface irregularities.

Dye Penetrant Testing services are provided by many companies and can be performed on-site or in-house. The benefits of DPT include increased product quality, reduced risk of failure or accidents, improved safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Overall, Dye Penetrant Testing is an essential NDT technique that helps to ensure the quality and integrity of materials and components, and prevent failures and accidents.

In ultrasonic testing (UT), very short ultrasonic pulse-waves with center frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz and occasionally up to 50 MHz are launched into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials. A common example is ultrasonic thickness measurement, which tests the thickness of the test object, for example, to monitor pipework corrosion. Ultrasonic testing is often performed on steel and other metals and alloys, though it can also be used on concrete, wood and composites, albeit with less resolution. It is a form of non-destructive testing used in many industries including aerospace, automotive and other transportation sectors.

In pulse-echo mode, the transducer performs both the sending and the receiving of the pulsed waves as the "sound" is reflected back to the device. Reflected ultrasound comes from an interface, such as the back wall of the object or from an imperfection within the object. The diagnostic machine displays these results in the form of a signal with an amplitude representing the intensity of the reflection and the distance, representing the arrival time of the reflection.

    Advantages

    1. High penetrating power, which allows the detection of flaws deep in the part.

    2. High sensitivity, permitting the detection of extremely small flaws.

    3. Greater accuracy than other nondestructive methods in determining the depth of internal flaws and the thickness of parts with parallel surfaces.

    4. Some capability of estimating the size, orientation, shape and nature of defects.

    5. Non hazardous to operations or to nearby personnel and has no effect on equipment and materials in the vicinity.

    6. Capable of portable or highly automated operation.

    7. It is sensitive to both surface and subsurface discontinuities.

    8. Only single-sided access is needed when the pulse-echo technique is used.

    9. Minimal part preparation is required.

    10. Electronic equipment provides instantaneous results.

    11. Detailed images can be produced with automated systems.

    12. It has other uses, such as thickness measurement, in addition to flaw detection

Fluorescent magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is a type of non-destructive testing (NDT) service that is used to detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. This method uses a magnetic field and a magnetic particle solution that contains fluorescent particles.

During the inspection process, the magnetic field is applied to the component, and the fluorescent magnetic particle solution is sprayed onto the surface. If there are any surface or sub-surface discontinuities present in the material, the magnetic particles will be attracted to these areas and form an indication. The fluorescent particles will then illuminate under UV light, making it easier to detect any potential defects.

Fluorescent MPI service is commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and manufacturing to detect defects such as cracks, porosity, and inclusions in components such as engine blocks, gears, and pipelines. This method is highly reliable and efficient, and it can help to prevent failures, reduce downtime, and ensure the safety and integrity of critical components.
Our organization is engaged in offering a wide assortment of Fluorescent MPI Service to our clients. These services are rendered by professionals. In addition to this, these MPI services are offered at reasonable and affordable rates.

Radiography testing, also known as X-ray inspection, is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect internal defects and discontinuities in materials and components. In radiography testing, a beam of ionizing radiation is passed through the object being inspected, and the resulting image is captured on a radiographic film or detector.

Radiography testing is commonly used in various industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and construction. It is especially useful for inspecting welds, castings, and other structural components for defects such as cracks, voids, inclusions, and porosity.

One of the advantages of radiography testing is its ability to detect internal defects that may not be visible from the surface. It can also provide high-resolution images that allow for detailed analysis of the object being inspected. However, radiography testing requires specialized equipment and trained personnel to ensure safety and accurate results. Radiation exposure to workers and the public must be minimized through proper shielding and monitoring.

We are among the leading companies who offer the Radiography Testing Services. The term hardness, as it is used in industry, may be defined as the ability of a material to resist permanent indentation or deformation when in contact with an indenter under load. Generally a hardness test consists of pressing an indenter of known geometry and mechanical properties into the test material. The hardness of the material is quantified using one of a variety of scales that directly or indirectly indicate the contact pressure involved in deforming the test surface. Since the indenter is pressed into the material during testing, hardness is also viewed as the ability of a material to resist compressive loads. The indenter may be spherical (Brinell test), pyramidal (Vickers and Knoop tests), or conical (Rockwell test). In the Brinell, Vickers, and Knoop tests, hardness value is the load supported by unit area of the indentation, expressed in kilograms per square millimeter (kgf/mm2). In the Rockwell tests, the depth of indentation at a prescribed load is determined and converted to a hardness number (without measurement units), which is inversely related to the depth.Hardness testing is perhaps the simplest and the least expensive method of mechanically characterizing a material since it does not require an elaborate specimen preparation, involves rather inexpensive testing equipment, and is relatively quick. The theoretical and empirical investigations have resulted in fairly accurate quantitative relationships between hardness and other mechanical properties of materials such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and strain hardening coefficient and fatigue strength and creep. These relationships help measure these properties with an accuracy sufficient for quality control during the intermediate and final stages of manufacturing. Many times hardness testing is the only nondestructive testalternative available to qualify and release finished components for end application.Hardness Testing is often used to verify the effectiveness of the heat treatment applied to actual castings. Its general correlation with the tensile strength of many ferrous alloys allows a rough prediction of tensile strength to be made

Radiographic Testing (RT), or industrial radiography, is a nondestructive testing (NDT) method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the ability of short wavelength electromagnetic radiation (high energy photons) to penetrate various materials.

Either an X-ray machine or a radioactive source (Ir-192 or Co-60) can be used as a source of photons.

Since the amount of radiation emerging from the opposite side of the material can be detected and measured, variations in this amount (or intensity) of radiation are used to determine the availability of flaws or discontinuities in the material. Penetrating radiations are those restricted to that part of the electromagnetic spectrum of wavelength less than about 10 nanometres.

The purpose of Radiography Testing is to show the presence and nature of defects or other structural discontinuities in the interior of the materials under examination. Radiography makes the use of the ability of short wavelength electromagnetic radiations, such as X-ray or Gamma ray, to penetrate objects. In general, the shorter the wavelength, greater the penetrating power. The radiation that enters through the material, some being absorbed in the material itself and amount of absorption is a function of the density, thickness and atomic number of the material. Should there be any cavity or discontinuity in the interior of the material, the beam of radiation will have less material to pass through than in solid material. Consequently there will be a variation in the absorption of the rays by the material in the defective area. The variation, if measured or recorded on a film sensitive to X-ray or Gamma ray, produces an image that will indicate the presence of the defect. The image is an X-ray or Gamma ray shadow of the interior of the material. Thus, radiography is essentially based on the principle of shadow projection and such a shadow picture is called a Radiograph. Variations in the darkness may be interpreted to provide information concerning the internal structure of the material. The basic setup essentially consists of a source of radiation, the object to be radiographed and a detector which is normally a sheet of photographic film.

Advantages 1. Best NDT method for detection of volumetric discontinuities.

    2. Internal flaws could be precisely located.

    3. Records/Radiographs could be stored forever.

Coil magnetic particle testing (MPT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and subsurface defects in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, steel, and nickel. The technique involves inducing a magnetic field in the material and applying magnetic particles to the surface. The magnetic particles will accumulate at areas of magnetic flux leakage caused by defects in the material.

During coil MPT, a high-frequency alternating current is passed through a coil, creating a magnetic field in the material. The material is then coated with a magnetic particle suspension, which is attracted to areas of magnetic flux leakage, highlighting any surface or subsurface defects.

Coil MPT is commonly used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing to detect defects in components such as engine blocks, turbine blades, and pipes. The technique is particularly useful for detecting cracks, corrosion, and other defects that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Overall, coil magnetic particle testing is an important non-destructive testing method that can help businesses ensure the safety and reliability of their ferromagnetic components. By identifying and addressing defects early on, businesses can avoid costly downtime and repairs, as well as minimize the risk of accidents and failures.

Penetrant inspection depends mainly on the ability of the liquid to wet the surface of a solid work piece or specimen and flow over that surface to form a continuous and reasonably uniform coating, thus penetrating into cavaties that are open to the surface. The ability of a given liquid to flow over a surface and enter surface cavities mainly depands on the surface tension and capillary action. The cohesive force between the molecules of a liquid causes surface tension.Capillary action is a phenomenon of rise or depression of liquid in narrow cavities. Viscosity, another factor, although has negligible effect on penetrating ability of liquid, affects the flowing ability of Penetrant. Very viscous liquids are unsuitable as penetrants because they don’t flowrapidly enough over the surface bof the test piece; consequently they require excessively long periods of time to penetrate into fine flaws.Visible light and ultraviolet light is required for the inspection of Penetrant indications. Initially, the only detection method used was the unaided observation by the eye of the inspector under visible light. The quality of the human eye strongly affects the perception of brightness of an indication. The nature of light strongly affects the percepted brightness of the coloured region being observed. Thus it is important to have proper lighting at the inspection area.Flourescence describes the release of light energy by some substances when they are excited by external radiation such us ultraviolet light. In penetration inspection, when the particles in fluid are struck by the incident ultraviolet light, they are excited to a higher energy level. After being excited, each particle then, returns to the original unexcited level with the emission of the light having wavelength longer than the original source. Thus the emitted light is in the visible spectrum. Because, the UV light is not normally seen by the human eye, it is also called black light. The advantage of this in penetrant inspection is that, the region holding greater amounts of the fluorescent penetrant appear vary bright. When the inspection is performed in very subdued light, the region clear of Penetrant material will appear black. Due to this effect, the visibility of small indication is greatly enhanced.MAGNETIC PARTICLE

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is one of the more specialised non destructive testing methods. With positive material identification the alloy composition of materials can be determined. If a material certificate is missing or it is not clear what the composition of a material is, then PMI offers the solution. Because specifications for materials used in industry are increasingly more specific, the need for PMI testing has been on an increase for the past several years. Periodic plant maintenance shutdowns are less frequent and consequently the materials used in the plant are in use longer. A wider variety of alloys that are indistinguishable to the eye are being used in process plants. When facility and inspection staff replace components, they must be able to guarantee that the new part matches required specifications. Recent industrial accidents have cost the lives of workers and heightened the awareness of the need for accurate and comprehensive PMI inspections. The XRF principle (x ray fluorescence) is one of the methods for PMI. Equipment used contains low radioactive sources (isotopes) or x-ray tubes. The exposed material reflects the radiation, generating energy. As every element has it's own atomic structure, this reflection will generate a different energy level for every element. This energy is measured and detected, thus identifying the alloy elements. The other method for PMI is Spark emission spectrography. Spectography is based on optical emission. The equipment consists of a probe which releases a spark that is used to vapourise the material being analysed. The atoms and ions in this vapour produce a spectrum which can be optically measured and then recalculated to determine the components of the material. Material properties like structure difference and heat treatments have no influence on the results of the PMI measurements. However, it is important that the surface is identical to rest of the material. Oxides, coatings and dirt on the material will influence the identification results. Also the surface must be smooth. Elements that can be identified using PMI include: Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Se, Nb, Mo. Interesting to know is that the exposure of radiation is sufficiently low, so that extra safety measures are not required. When dealing with exploitation licenses and preventive maintenance of technical installations, Non Destructive Testing and Examination (NDT / NDE) are indispensable techniques. NDT / NDE offer also the necessary guarantees when quality, expense saving, business security and safety is in order, for both existing and new installations. NDT / NDE decrease the risk of leakage or other defects, which increase the business integrity and safety within the installation and can save expenses.

Today, many major oil companies require that every pipe, flange, connector, valve and welding seam in critical parts of the plant be measured to verify that materials match engineering specifications. In addition to compatibility issues, several other reasons can exist for material specification including design, corrosion resistance, and compliance to codes and standards such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. It also finds applications in the following areas :-

Aerospace Manufacturing • Aerospace Castings • Aerospace Fastener QA / QC • Failure Analysis

Electric Power Industry • Plant Inspection • Failure Analysis PMI • Incoming Materials • In Stock Materials • In service Testing

In-situ metallography is a non-destructive testing method used to examine the microstructure of a material in its actual state or location, without the need for cutting or removing a sample. This method involves using a portable metallography instrument to perform microscopic examination of the surface of the material, or at a specific location within the material.

In-situ metallography is commonly used in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and aerospace. It is particularly useful for inspecting large or complex components and structures, where the cost and time required for traditional destructive testing methods may be prohibitive.

The equipment used for in-situ metallography typically includes a portable microscope, an etchant, and polishing tools. The operator prepares the surface of the material to be examined, typically by polishing and etching, and then places the microscope on the surface to observe and record the microstructure of the material.

In-situ metallography can provide important information about the quality and integrity of a material, including the presence of defects, cracks, and other forms of damage. It can also be used to monitor changes in the microstructure of a material over time, such as during exposure to extreme temperatures or corrosive environments.

Overall, in-situ metallography is an important tool for ensuring the quality and safety of materials and structures. Positive Material Identification (PMI) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to identify the chemical composition of a material. It is commonly used in the manufacturing, construction, and oil and gas industries to ensure that the correct materials have been used in a product or structure.

PMI can be performed using various methods, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). These techniques can detect the elemental composition of a material, and provide accurate results quickly and non-destructively.

PMI is important because using the wrong materials in a product or structure can lead to failures, which can have serious consequences, including injury, loss of life, and damage to property. PMI can also help to identify corrosion-resistant alloys (CRAs) in the oil and gas industry, which are important for preventing corrosion and maintaining the integrity of pipelines and other equipment.

Overall, PMI is an essential quality control measure that ensures that materials meet the required standards and specifications, and helps to prevent failures and accidents.

Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface-breaking defects in materials. This method involves applying a liquid penetrant to the surface of the material, allowing it to seep into any surface defects, and then removing the excess penetrant and applying a developer. The developer draws out the penetrant from the defect and makes it visible, indicating the location and size of the defect.

Dye Penetrant Testing is commonly used in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and construction to detect surface cracks, porosity, laps, and other defects in materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites. It is a highly sensitive and cost-effective method that can detect very small defects that are not visible to the naked eye.

The Dye Penetrant Testing process typically involves several steps, including cleaning the surface to be tested, applying the penetrant, removing the excess penetrant, applying the developer, and then inspecting the surface for defects using UV light or visible light.

Dye Penetrant Testing is an important tool for ensuring the safety and reliability of materials and components. By identifying surface defects before they can cause failure or damage, businesses can prevent costly downtime, repairs, and recalls.

Visual inspection is the most widely used among all Non Destructive Tests. It is simple, easy to apply, quickly carried out, and usually low in cost. Even though a component is to be inspected using other NDT methods, a good visual inspection should be carried out first. A simple visual test can reveal gross surface defects thus leading to an immediate rejection of the component and consequently saving much time and money, which would otherwise be spent on more complicated means of testing. It is often necessary to examine for the presence of finer defects. For this purpose, visual methods have been developed to a very high degree of precision. With the advent of microprocessor and computers, visual examination can be carried out very reliably and with minimum cost. Image processing patterns recognition and automatic accept/reject choices are used when large numbers of components are to be assessed. The basic procedure used in visual NDT involves illumination of the test specimen with light, usually in visible region. The specimen is then examined with eye or by light sensitive devices such as photocells. The equipment required for visual inspection is extremely simple, but adequate illumination is absolutely essential. The surface of the specimen should be adequately cleaned before being inspected.

Fluorescent testing service is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and subsurface defects in materials using fluorescent dyes. This technique is often used in the aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries to ensure the quality and safety of materials and components.

During fluorescent testing, a fluorescent dye is applied to the surface of the material being inspected. The dye penetrates any surface cracks, defects, or discontinuities, making them visible under ultraviolet light. The areas of defect will appear as bright, contrasting indications against a dark background.

Fluorescent testing is a highly sensitive method that can detect very small defects in a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics. It can be used to detect surface cracks, porosity, inclusions, and other types of defects that can compromise the integrity and reliability of materials and components.

Overall, fluorescent testing service is an important tool for ensuring the quality and safety of materials and components in various industries. By identifying and addressing defects early on, businesses can avoid costly repairs and downtime, as well as minimize the risk of accidents and failures.
